Personality & Traits
General Overview | Jarrod is very easy going and friendly, but fiercely protective of his friends and family. |
Personal History | Jarrod was born Samual Day, Jarrod and Lora’s eldest of five children. Sam had a tumultuous childhood at best. His mother was very abusive of his father and neglectful of her children. As a result the children were much closer to their father. Sam’s days were full of tiptoeing around his mother to avoid her blowing up. When it came time for school, Sam looked forward to getting out of the house and away from his mother. Everything changed when he was eight years old and his mother was pregnant with their fifth child. Something snapped and his dad left, taking all four kids with him. They went to stay with friends of theirs, Ron and Stella Lask, who had a large house, but no children of their own. Life was quiet for a few weeks. Sam had no idea what was going on behind the scenes until he was much older, but his father was trying to get full custody of the children- including the unborn one- and a restraining order against his wife. Then one day when he and his sister came home from school, the Lasks sat them down and explained that their father had passed away and their mother was in prison. They did not find out until much later that their mother had shot their father while he was at work and his coworkers had detained her until police arrived. Since they had nowhere else to go, they stayed with the Lasks for a time. Eventually, Ron and Stella adopted the older three kids while Ron’s sister Angela Jensen and her husband Bruce adopted the younger two- after the youngest was born, of course. Sam asked if he could change his first name as well as his last, and so became Jarrod, in honor of his dead father. Ron and Stella were great parents, giving the kids every opportunity they possibly could. Jarrod and his sister Shannon were the only two who had concrete memories of their mother, and Ron and Stella opted to send them to therapy to help them cope with it all. In high school, Jarrod developed a crush on a girl who played the piano and so decided that he should take piano lessons so they would have something in common, but he ended up losing interest in her before he got up the nerve to talk to her. But, he stuck with lessons even into adulthood and still plays to this day. After high school, he didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life and ended up working the front desk at an auto repair shop. It was there he struck up a friendship with some of the local firefighters and decided to go through firefighter training. To his surprise- he was a skinny, geeky guy at that time- he passed with flying colors and happily took a place at the firehouse in his hometown. A few years later, he met Nicki, a werehound who had just returned from college and was starting a Leesh back in her own hometown. He felt drawn to her at once and took this as a sign that he should join her. Several of the other firefighters did the same as lycanthropy protected one against fire and other injuries and the werehounds were the most organized and peaceful of the lycans. Through the years, he found himself becoming more and more attracted to Nicki- something he found odd because she wasn’t particularly remarkable physically. Not that she was ugly. On the contrary, he felt she was quite pretty. But there was nothing about her to make her stand out. It must have been her personality, he decided. She seemed to be attracted to him, too, but hesitant to start anything. And then Ryan Thompson came along and Nicki began seeing him, eventually marrying him. Though Jarrod was heartbroken, he was glad that she was happy. And then Ryan went and got himself killed rescuing people from a hospital fire. Jarrod would never forget the absolute anguish on Nicki’s face as he tried to revive her husband for her. It just wasn’t working and though the doctors took over quickly, they could not save him. He and the rest of the Leesh tried to console her for awhile, but she spent so much time mourning, she stepped aside as their Alpha and allowed her second, Pete, to take over. She seemed to improve without the weight of leadership on her, but she avoided Jarrod. He resigned himself to the fact that she was not interested any longer and he should just move on. However, about a year after Ryan’s death, the hounds had to break up a skirmish between the werehyenas and the werevultures. Since her second didn’t have the votes to give him enough power to hold the Leesh together, Nicki had to take charge. Even she struggled to keep everything in hand and it was clear that they needed another vote. Nicki won unanimously, of course. After the vote, she invited Jarrod to run with her, which is something hounds did to let off steam after a vote. Running with someone usually meant they wanted something to happen after the run and Jarrod was not disappointed. He couldn’t believe his luck, but felt immediately guilty until Nicki admitted that she still had feelings for him, in fact, that she loved him. His heart soared! The two began seeing one another in earnest and soon, she convinced him to move to Nashville with her. He was nervous to do that- where would they get the money?- but she told him Ryan had left her a small fortune she hadn’t even known about before they got married and anyway, Jarrod was a firefighter. Surely Nashville could find a spot for an already trained firefighter. And so, because he could not bear the thought of life without her, he decided to follow her to Nashville. |
